eq2 crash log says exception access violation

Im trying to play EQ2 on my Vista x86. It plays well except that randomly from 1 minute to 30+ minutes into play the game freezes. I can still hear music playing and the mouse still moves in game but I cant do anything and video is not animating.
I generally can ctrl alt del and end task the game just fine.
I have tried using MS Nvidia 7800gt driver as well as the latest Nvidia downloaded driver. I have tried disabling my sound card (audigy2) I have firewall disabled. I have assigned "full control" permissions to EQ2 folders. I have tried "run as administrator" I have tried "win xp sp2" compatability. I have tried turning off DEP for all EQ exe files.
None of the windows logs indicate what happened but I did find an Eq2 crash log that says "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" on the first line. It also has "Memory Protection: PAGE_NOACCESS (00000001)"
Does anyone have some advice on what I might try next?
